Red Meets White Expedition
3|5|2013
To get more insight in Hypoxia, Synapse and Stago initiated the "Red Meets White Expedation" that will take place on June 3th. The expedition will be a comparative case-control study, where researchers are going to compare the effect of altitude, and therefore oxygen deprivation, on coagulation. For this study a team will travel to the Mont Blanc area where two groups will be formed. To identify the effect of physical activity on hemostasis one group existing of healthy volunteers will actively climb the Mont Blanc, while the other group of healthy volunteers will use the cable car.
Hypoxia is a serious condition affecting many patients entering the intensive care unit. Hypoxia is a threat for correct functoning of vital organs such as live rand kidneys and can be serious enough to cause the brain to stop functioning. Not only hypoxia itself has these effects on the body, but it also has many side-effects causing more serious organ failure. One of these main side-effects is the effect of hypoxia on hemostasis. The goal of the “Red Meets White Expedition” is to in-depth investigate hemostasis influenced by oxygen deprivation. During this expedition we will make use of state-of-the-art methods that were not available before that enables of to gain new insights into the disease process of hypoxia.
