31|08|2011

The realization of the Brains Unlimited complex started this week. The construction companies Cofely and Laudy are building together with Siemens Healtcare a high field MRI facility. Next to the facility an incubator will be constructed and housing for researchers from the faculty Psychology and Neuroscience. The fourth quarter of 2012 the Brains Unlimited complex will be operational.

Brains Unlimited is an initiative by the Maastricht University. In june 2010, the European Union has granted a four million euro ERDF subsidy to the Brains Unlimited project, intended to make the Dutch province of Limburg a major player in brain research. This is allocated as part of the “Operationeel Programma Zuid-Nederland” (Operational Program South Netherlands). Contributions from the Province of Limburg, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Municipality of Maastricht doubled the subsidy. In addition the provincial government of Limburg invested ten million Euros in the Brains Unlimited project.

Brains Unlimited comprises the Maastricht Brain Imaging Center, a high field functional MRI facility with 3T, 7T and 9.4T scanners and an incubator where new businesses will be created and where clinical applications and novel therapies of nervous system disorders can be released for the market.  Brains Unlimited B.V. exploits the MRI facility and BioPartner Center Maastricht B.V runs the NeuroPartner incubator. Both companies are daughters of the Maastricht University (Medical Center) Holding. More information about the Brains Unlimited project can be found via the following link.
